John Terry: How Chelsea have caught title rivals by surprise

The Chelsea captain believes Antonio Conte's tactics have caught out their title rivals

John Terry has claimed that Antonio Conte’s tactics have caught Chelsea’s rivals by surprise in the Premier League title race.

The Blues have won their last 11 Premier League games after a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend thanks to Diego Costa’s winner.

Chelsea haven’t lost a Premier League fixture since suffering back-to-back defeats by their title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal in September.

The west London outfit opted to switch to a 3-4-3 formation following their resounding 3-0 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

And Conte’s tactical change has promoted an impressive 11-game winning run that has seen Chelsea keep an incredible eight clean sheets.

The Premier League leaders have also beaten title contenders Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur during that run.

Speaking to Soccer AM on Saturday morning, Terry lifted the lid on Conte’s decision to change his formation after a tough September.

“The manager had it in mind pre-season so we’ve done a lot of work tactically on playing three at the back,” Terry said.

“We lost to Liverpool and Arsenal and the manager has decided to switch and it has worked. The team has looked really good. You’re sitting there watching it. It’s been really good to see. It has taken other teams by surprise a little bit because we haven’t seen that formation in the Premier League for so many years.”

Chelsea are six points ahead of second-placed Liverpool in the title race.
