Jose Mourinho delivers update on key Man United man’s future
Jose Mourinho confirms that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to stay at Manchester United beyond next summer
Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is likely to extend his stay at Manchester United beyond next summer.
The Swedish striker has been in fine form for the Red Devils this season since joining the Premier League club on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
Ibrahimovic continued his strong form in the Premier League when he scored his 12th goal of the season during Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Sunderland on Boxing Day.
There had initially been some doubts as to whether Ibrahimovic would be able to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League in the latter stages of his career.
However, Mourinho admits that he has been delighted by what he has seen from Ibrahimovic so far this season and is expecting him to stay at Manchester United beyond next summer.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website after Monday’s win over Sunderland, Mourinho said: “I’m not really surprised because he’s a very intelligent guy, a very proud man.
“He decided to come to Manchester United and to the Premier League, to a club with the level of expectation that Manchester United has, to the most difficult league in the world for a striker.
“When he decided to come here, it’s because he knows he can do it. When we contacted him, he told us: ‘Yes, I want [it]’. I was sure he was not coming here to leave the Premier League without proof, leave the Premier League failing at Manchester United. No way.
“When such a guy decided to come, I was completely clear that he would be ready and he’s ready for more. Next season, he will be here again.”
Manchester United will take on Middlesbrough at Old Trafford in their next Premier League game.
