Jose Mourinho reacts to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s display in Man United’s 4-1 win over West Ham
Jose Mourinho was thrilled to see Henrikh Mkhitaryan produce a strong display for Manchester United against West Ham
Jose Mourinho could not hide his delight at Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s performance after watching his Manchester United team notch up a thumping 4-1 win over West Ham United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Mkhitaryan’s situation at United has been a source of much scrutiny following his summer transfer to the Red Devils from Borussia Dortmund.
The Armenia international has struggled for form and fitness since his arrival at the club but now seems to be staking his claim for a spot in the starting line-up at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes and notched up two assists for his team-mates as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial both scored twice against the Hammers to secure their spot in the last four of the competition.
And Mourinho was full of praise for the highly-rated playmaker after the final whistle.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports after the game, Mourinho said: “I’m so happy because today was against a Premier League team with Premier League qualities with Premier League characteristics.
“That showed clearly his evolution. Against Feyenoord we could think, ‘OK it is a different profile of football’ but today was against a proper and typical Premier League team and Micky could perform this way. So I’m really happy.
“We know the reason why we bought him and we were waiting for his adaptation and it looks like it’s coming.”
Manchester United will now turn their attentions towards their Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
