Jose Mourinho sends blunt warning to Man United striker Anthony Martial

Jose Mourinho tells Anthony Martial that he will have to work hard to earn a regular spot in the Manchester United team this term

Jose Mourinho has warned Anthony Martial that he will have to step his game up if he wants to earn a regular spot in the Manchester United team this season.

The 21-year-old striker has found his first-team opportunities somewhat restricted this season since Mourinho’s appointment as the club’s new manager back in May.

Indeed, the France international has only made seven starts in the Premier League for Mourinho’s men this term as the Portuguese coach instead preferred to start with Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front for much of the campaign.

Martial has scored one goal and made three assists in the Premier League for Manchester United this season.

However, Mourinho says that the striker will have to work hard to earn a regular spot in his Manchester United team this season.

Mourinho is quoted as saying by The Daily Express: “People forget that Anthony is very, very young and last season Manchester United played completely different than we do today.

“He was basically playing up front. The team had lots of passive ball possession, waiting just for a moment to put it into space for Anthony to go and score a goal.

“This season is more difficult. I think he needs a little bit of time to improve.”
