Juan Mata issues warning to Arsenal, Tottenham in top-four race
The Manchester United midfielder is hoping to close the gap on the top four
Juan Mata has warned Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur that Manchester United are ready to capitalise on any slip ups in the top-four race.
The 20-time English champions were 2-0 winners against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic either side of half-time at the Hawthorns.
Manchester United have managed to kick-start their top-four bid in recent weeks following successive victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and West Brom to leave the Red Devils in sixth place but within touching distance of the top four.
Indeed, Arsenal have lost back-to-back Premier League games to Everton and Manchester City to leave Arsene Wenger’s side a mere four points ahead of Manchester United ahead of the Boxing Day fixtures.
And Mata is targeting six points against Sunderland and Middlesbrough as the Red Devils looks to close the gap on fourth-placed Arsenal in the hunt for a place in next season’s Champions League competition.
“Before the end of the year we have two more games in Old Trafford where we will try to continue with the positive results,” Mata wrote on his personal blog.
“In the last two away fixtures we had tough games against Crystal Palace and West Brom, and we didn’t have much time to rest in between, but we were able to win both of them with a mix of talent, effort, and being united.
“That should be our mentality when we play against Sunderland and Middlesbrough, to try to approach the teams ahead of us on the table before the end of the year.”
Manchester United finished in fifth place in the Premier League last season.
