Juan Mata: What Man United are reinforcing in top-four race

The Manchester United midfielder insists that the Red Devils have potential under Jose Mourinho

Juan Mata believes Manchester United have reinforced their potential under Jose Mourinho thanks to their winning run in the Premier League.

The Red Devils were 2-0 winners against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Saturday evening after summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic managed to score either side of half-time in the Premier League clash.

Manchester United have won their last three top-flight games thanks to victories over Crystal Palace, Totttenham Hotspur and West Brom to give their hopes of finishing in the top four a timely boost.

Mourinho’s side are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal after Arsene Wenger’s men lost to Everton and Manchester City in their final two Premier League games before Christmas Day.

Writing in his personal blog ahead of the visit of the Premier League’s basement club Sunderland at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, Mata talked up Mourinho’s men following their excellent form in recent weeks.

“Our win against WBA on Saturday, the fourth victory in a row, gives us plenty of optimism and good feelings with a view to the last two weeks of the year,” Mata said.

“We are reinforcing something that I’ve been claiming since the start of the season: that the team has got potential and good football, and I’m sure we will keep showing that in 2017.”

Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May after Manchester United finished in fifth place last season.
