Mourinho delivers latest Man United injury update ahead of Middlesbrough test
Jose Mourinho delivers the latest update on Wayne Rooney's fitness ahead of Manchester United's clash with Middlesbrough
Jose Mourinho has admitted that Wayne Rooney is unlikely to be fit for Manchester United’s clash against Middlesbrough on New Year’s Eve.
The Manchester United captain sat out the Red Devils’ 3-1 Boxing Day win over Sunderland at Old Trafford after picking up a minor thigh strain in training.
The Red Devils secured the three points against the Black Cats to continue their good form and wrap up their fourth win in a row in the Premier League.
Mourinho was quizzed about Rooney’s fitness levels after the win over Sunderland and seemed to suggest that the England international would not be ready for Saturday’s game.
Asked if he expects Rooney to be fit to face Middlesbrough, Mourinho said: “Honestly, I don’t think so. I hope so. I would like to have him, he’s always a player I would like to have but I have my doubts. Let’s see the evolution [of the injury].
“It’s a strange muscle, a big muscle surrounded by others and you can have an injury there but still be able to move well. He was not feeling very confident. It’s not a big deal but, in four days, I have my doubts.”
Manchester United have been in fine form in recent weeks but still find themselves sixth in the Premier League table as they look to haul themselves back into the title race.
The Red Devils finished fifth and won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal last season before he was sacked and replaced by Mourinho back in May.
