Liverpool defender: How Jurgen Klopp’s half-time team talk inspired derby win
Dejan Lovren explains how the Liverpool manager inspired a memorable 1-0 win at Everton
Dejan Lovren has explained how Jurgen Klopp’s half-time team talk helped to inspire Liverpool to a 1-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday night.
The 18-time English champions were on the back foot for most of the first half after Everton put the visitors under sustained pressure in the opening exchanges at Goodison Park.
However, Liverpool were by far the better side in the second half as Brazil international Roberto Firmino was twice denied by good saves from close range to leave the derby heading for a goalless stalemate.
But Sadio Mane scored a dramatic winner in the fourth minute of added time after the Senegal forward reacted quickest to the loose ball after Daniel Sturridge’s strike hit the woodwork.
Speaking to Liverpool’s website after a memorable conclusion to the Merseyside derby, Lovren revealed what Klopp said at half-time to inspire a dramatic victory.
“It is about the team’s defensive qualities. We have been working very hard together and just now we are in good form and we need to keep going like that,” Lovren said.
“We missed something in the first half, but we had a good quality talk from the manager at half-time and he was asking us to play more direct football.
“If you want to win you need to be more offensive and ask for the ball. In the second half we showed our real face and deserved it.”
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and six points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
