Liverpool legend explains why Alexis Sanchez is more important than Arsenal star
Mark Lawrenson explains why Alexis Sanchez has become Arsenal's key player
Mark Lawrenson believes Alexis Sanchez has replaced Mesut Ozil as Arsenal’s most-important player in Arsene Wenger’s side.
The Chile international has enjoyed a prolific start to the 2016-17 season after scoring 11 times in 15 Premier League appearances this term.
Sanchez has been utilised in a centre-forward role in the current campaign and the South American netted three times in a 5-1 win against West Ham United.
Ozil, on the other hand, has also impressed in a midfield role and the Germany international has scored in his last two appearances in the Arsenal side.
Speaking to BBC One’s Football Focus show, former Liverpool defender Lawrenson explained why Sanchez is more important than Ozil to the Gunners.
“If you had to lose one of them, I’d rather lose Ozil than Sanchez. Sanchez is the key. He can play in all sorts of different positions. He is tough. He has everything,” Lawrenson said.
Ozil became Arsenal’s club-record signing when the Gunners signed the World Cup winner in a £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2013.
Sanchez followed Ozil from La Liga to the Premier League less than 12 months later when the Chile star sealed a £35m switch from Barcelona in July 2014.
