Sami Hyypia: What I really think about Liverpool signing Joel Matip

Sami Hyypia has revealed that he is a big fan of Liverpool summer signing Joel Matip.
The Cameroon international completed a free transfer to Liverpool from Bundesliga outfit Schalke in the summer transfer window.
Matip has already established himself as a first-choice centre-half in Jurgen Klopp’s side following a string of impressive performances.
The African defender made his debut in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in August as he managed to keep Harry Kane quiet.
Matip’s importance to Liverpool was highlighted when he missed their 4-3 loss to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium at the start of the month.
Former Liverpool centre-half Hyypia, who was part of Rafael Benitez’s Champions League winning side in 2005, examined Matip’s qualities following comparisons between the retired Finn and the Cameroon star.
“I knew him from Germany, I think I played against him and then managed Leverkusen when he was at Schalke,” Hyypia told Liverpool’s website.
“He’s a good player. He’s a big guy, dominant player, very comfortable on the ball and that’s a big piece of how the team plays.
“When you want to play football, you need to have somebody who is comfortable on the ball and on the other hand a strong defender.
“His style of play is that he is comfortable on the ball but I think that comes from confidence, he is very confident that he can play football.”
Hyypia added: “If you want to see similarities, I think there are some – but I think he’s a bit quicker than me!”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League last season after Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
The Reds boss signed seven players in the summer transfer window, including Matip.
