Liverpool legend: This Arsenal star more important than Mesut Ozil
Mark Lawrenson believes Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez is now Arsene Wenger's most-important player
Mark Lawrenson believes Alexis Sanchez has usurped Mesut Ozil as Arsenal’s most-important player.
The Chile international has made an impressive start to the 2016-17 season after Arsene Wenger opted to utilise the former Barcelona man in a centre-forward role this term.
Sanchez scored a second-half hat-trick in Arsenal’s resounding 5-1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium in their Premier League game last weekend.
The South American forward has now netted 11 times in 14 Premier League appearances – only Chelsea centre-forward Diego Costa has scored as many goals as Sanchez.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Sanchez’s outstanding performances this season have established the Arsenal forward as Wenger’s key player ahead of Germany midfielder Ozil.
“The Gunners are flying at the moment and Alexis Sanchez has become their most important player – more so than Mesut Ozil,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
Sanchez moved to Arsenal in a £35m deal from La Liga giants Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The Chile forward scored 16 times in his first Premier League campaign as he ended the 2014-15 season as a FA Cup winner.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004.
