Liverpool legend: This has been Man United’s key problem this season
Phil Thompson discusses Manchester United's stuttering start to the season under Jose Mourinho
Phil Thompson believes that Manchester United’s over-reliance on Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been a key factor in their stuttering start to the new season.
The Red Devils have struggled to string together a series of consistent results in the Premier League so far this term following Jose Mourinho’s appointment as the club’s new manager back in May.
United face an uphill struggle in trying to haul themselves back into contention in the Premier League as the race for a top-four finish begins to hot up.
Mourinho has been tasked with steering United back into the Champions League after their disappointing fifth-placed finish last season.
However, former Liverpool star Thompson feels that the Red Devils have been relying too much on veteran striker Ibrahimovic to score the goals for them this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon, Thompson said: “The problem is they haven’t had enough goal-scorers.
“Ibrahimovic is back on form and in the goals but there aren’t too many others who you think can help break this [run of form]. It’s literally left down to him [Ibrahimovic].
“We saw that when he wasn’t scoring it cost them a lot of points. Yes, they could go on a decent run because this is Manchester United, but there are still issues to be sorted out.”
Manchester United won the FA Cup and finished fifth in the Premier League under Louis van Gaal last season.
