Paul Merson states bold prediction for Liverpool v Man City
The ex-Arsenal midfielder is backing Liverpool to beat Manchester City comfortably at Anfield on New Year's Eve
Paul Merson is confident that Liverpool can ease to a comfortable victory over Manchester City at Anfield on New Year’s Eve.
Liverpool will be looking to stay in touch with current Premier League leaders Chelsea after closing the gap to six points thanks to the Reds’ 4-1 win against Stoke City at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
The Merseyside outfit have won their last three Premier League games against Middlesbrough, Everton and Stoke City ahead of the visit of Pep Guardiola’s Citizens side.
The Eastlands outfit warmed up for their trip to Anfield with a 3-0 victory over Premier League strugglers Hull City on Boxing Day to hoist themselves into third spot.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is confident that Liverpool will secure three points against the Citizens.
“You didn’t see City’s 3-0 win over Hull coming after 60 minutes, and I don’t see how they can live with Liverpool’s attack. I think Liverpool will win quite comfortably,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“City have world-class players but for me, I don’t think they know what they’re doing. I look at them and I think they’re just waiting for something to happen and if Liverpool go in front, I think they will run away with it.
“Forget the last 20 minutes against Hull, before that it was average from City. If you play like that against Liverpool, the game will be over by then. They don’t look comfortable.
“Liverpool go out and attack and they can score bundles of goals. The defenders at City aren’t good enough – he’s left out John Stones and the others haven’t been as bad. For me, I don’t see anything but a Liverpool win.”
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and six points adrift of leaders Chelsea in the title race.
The Blues will host Stoke City in their next Premier League game at the Britannia Stadium.
