Man United can get back into the title race, claims ex-striker

Dean Saunders still feels that Manchester United will have a part to play in the title race this season

Manchester United can still haul themselves back into the title race and catch Chelsea, according to Dean Saunders.

It has been far from the perfect start to life at Manchester United for Jose Mourinho following his appointment as the club’s new manager in the summer.

The Red Devils have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League under their new boss and currently trail leaders Chelsea by 13 points heading into the hectic festive schedule.

Manchester United have started to show signs of promise under their new boss in recent games, however.

The Red Devils have won their last three games in the top flight to give them some strong momentum heading into the Christmas period.

And former Liverpool striker Saunders feels that things are slowly starting to click into gear for the Merseyside outfit.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Tuesday morning, Saunders said: “They’ve spent a lot of money and are just off the pace. They could put it right but I just think they’ll be disappointed with where they are lying right now.

“They’ve turned the corner. [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic is scoring every week, the two centre-backs look good, [Paul] Pogba’s looking like a different player on the left of a three-man midfield.

“They’re starting to look like one of Jose Mourinho’s teams, which are hard to play against. He’s starting to get it together.

“Mourinho took a bit of criticism but I have to say he’s probably the best manager in the world so don’t underestimate what he’s doing behind the scenes.

“He’ll be getting that team functioning and before long it’ll be like a machine. Whether they’ve given themselves too much to do remains to be seen but there’s still a long way to go.”
