Man United legend explains why Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez must stay at Arsenal
Rio Ferdinand feels that Arsenal keeping hold of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil would be a boost to the Premier League
Rio Ferdinand believes that Arsenal must keep Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez – for the good of the Premier League.
Both Sanchez and Ozil are believed to be in talks with Arsenal about the possibility of extending their contracts at The Emirates beyond 2018, when they are both set to expire.
Sanchez has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best attackers since his arrival in England and has flourished in a centre-forward role this season for the Gunners.
Ozil, meanwhile, is widely considered to be one of the best playmakers in Europe and notched up more assists than any other player in the Premier League last season.
And Manchester United legend believes that it is key for the Premier League to keep stars such as Ozil and Sanchez playing on English shores.
Writing in his column for The London Evening Standard, Ferdinand said: “Both men [Ozil and Sanchez] are the subject of a lot of contract stories and whether they will agree new deals to stay at Emirates Stadium. Arsenal fans obviously want it to happen, yet I think it is crucial for the Premier League, too.
“There have been too many occasions in the last few years where the best players have been taken away, like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez. I think Sanchez and Ozil are among the top five or six best players in the division right now.
“I hope they stay and keep their star power and ability on these shores. For the Premier League to showcase itself, it needs great talent to remain in it.”
Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League table and three points behind leaders Chelsea.
The north London side finished second and without a trophy last season.
