Man United legend Rio Ferdinand: Why I love Arsenal star Mesut Ozil

Rio Ferdinand delivers his honest verdict on Arsenal star Mesut Ozil

Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he is a huge admirer of Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil and has talked up his importance to the Gunners team.

Ozil once again proved his worth to the north London side when he set up Arsenal’s fourth goal in their thumping 4-1 win over Basel on Tuesday night as Arsene Wenger’s men topped their Champions League group.

The 28-year-old has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s top playmakers since his arrival at the club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.

Ozil notched up more assists than any other player in the Premier League last season as the north London side finished in second place and without a trophy.

Although he admits that Ozil is not everyone’s favourite player, Ferdinand has explained just why he is such a big fan of the playmaker.

Speaking on BT Sport on Tuesday night, Ferdinand said: “He does divide opinion but I’m a huge fan. I love him.

“He probes, I just want to see him run beyond and hurt himself physically a bit more and be more aggressive in what he does.

“He’s quick – you don’t realise because he looks relaxed but he can actually run and when he gets in on goal, he’s cool as you like.

“He can absolutely destroy and embarrass teams. It’s beautiful.”
