Man United midfielder talks up Jose Mourinho’s side in title race

Jesse Lingard believes Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title this season

Jesse Lingard insists Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Red Devils are in sixth place in the Premier League table after a stuttering start to life under Jose Mourinho.

The 20-time English champions managed to close the gap between them and fourth-placed Arsenal to four points after their 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns last weekend.

The Red Devils are still 13 points behind current leaders Chelsea after the west London side won their 11th successive Premier League game at Crystal Palace last Saturday.

Mourinho’s side have won their last three Premier League games thanks to victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

Manchester United midfielder Lingard believes Mourinho’s players are capable of challenging for the title if the piece together a winning run in the second half of the campaign.

“If the lads stick together and win the games we should be winning then I don’t see why we can’t be in a good position in May and challenging for the title,” Lingard told United’s website.

“We’ve found our match rhythm now. A lot of players are playing their part and helping us win games. I think the defence has been very good for us, particularly over the last three or four games. We need to keep that going over the Christmas period and if we can do that it will put us in a good place in January.”

The Red Devils finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term.
