Paul Merson states his prediction for Man United v Tottenham
Paul Merson looks ahead to Manchester United's crunch clash with Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday
Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to return to winning ways with a convincing 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils have struggled to produce consistent form in the Premier League this season and were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at Everton last weekend.
Indeed, United have only won two of their last 10 Premier League games to leave them 13 points behind leaders Chelsea after 14 games of the new season.
Jose Mourinho did watch his United side return to winning ways on Thursday night as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired them to a 2-0 win over Zorya in the Europa League.
And former Arsenal man Merson is expecting to see United claim all three points against Spurs in Sunday’s showdown at Old Trafford.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “If Man United lose this game, it’s the middle of December and they are out of the title race.
“They’ll be struggling to stay in the top-four hunt too, with fifth-place Spurs already six points ahead of Jose Mourinho’s side. They can’t allow that gap to grow to nine.
“I think they’re playing well enough at the moment and creating chances, and before Marouane Fellaini came on against Everton, it was a very Jose Mourinho performance at Goodison.
“It’s how they turn those draws into wins, but I’m backing them to figure it out against Tottenham.”
Manchester United finished fifth and won the FA Cup last season, while Spurs ended up third and without a trophy.
