Mark Lawrenson: Why David Moyes will get warm Man United reception
Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson is confident David Moyes will get a good reception from the Manchester United supporters
Mark Lawrenson says he expects David Moyes to get a warm reception when the Sunderland manager returns to Manchester United on Boxing Day.
The Scot will take charge of a Premier League club at Old Trafford for the first time since Moyes was sacked as Manchester United manager in 2014.
Moyes was appointed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor in 2013 but the ex-Everton boss was sacked with Manchester United struggling outside of the top-four places.
His successor Louis van Gaal struggled to revive Manchester United during the Dutchman’s two seasons in charge despite winning the FA Cup last season.
Jose Mourinho took over the reins of the Red Devils in May but the Portuguese coach has struggled to improve Manchester United’s fortunes.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes the Manchester United supporters will give their ex-manager a warm welcome upon his return to Old Trafford.
“I am expecting Sunderland manager David Moyes to get a really good reception when he returns to Old Trafford for the first time since he was sacked by Manchester United in April 2014,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“I think people now appreciate that, when he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson, Moyes had a more difficult job to do than the man who replaced him, Louis van Gaal.
“I don’t think Moyes is going to have much joy on Boxing Day, though, because this United team seem to have clicked.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 13 points behind current leaders Chelsea.
The Red Devils have won their last three Premier League games.
