Martin Keown: Arsene Wenger will be disappointed with this Arsenal defender
Martin Keown delivers his verdict on Carl Jenkinson's performance in Arsenal's 2-0 loss to Southampton in EFL Cup
Martin Keown believes Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will be disappointed with Carl Jenkinson’s performance in their 2-0 loss to Southampton on Wednesday night.
The England Under-21 international was drafted in at right-back after Mathieu Debuchy lasted a mere 11 minutes of the north London side’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth last weekend.
Arsenal are currently without first-choice right-back Hector Bellerin after the Spanish star suffered an ankle injury during their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in last month’s north London derby.
Jenkinson has recently returned from a lengthy lay-off with an injury but has failed to break into Wenger’s first-team.
Former Arsenal centre-half Keown was critical of the 24-year-old’s performance in the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat by Southampton in the EFL Cup quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
“Wenger will have been disappointed by Jenkinson — he looked devoid of confidence,” Keown told The Daily Mail.
“Somewhere along the line Wenger has to motivate these players to give more when they play.”
