Martin Keown delivers verdict on Man United signing: He is really in the mood now

Martin Keown has been impressed by what he's seen from Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Manchester United of late

Martin Keown has admitted that he doesn’t understand why it took Henrikh Mkhitaryan so long to settle at Manchester United but says he now looks like he can hit top form.

The Armenia international joined the Red Devils from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window but failed to have an instant impact at Old Trafford.

Mkhitaryan struggled to break into the first team and produced a disappointing performance in the 2-1 loss to Manchester City at Old Trafford early in the season.

However, the midfielder has been in impressive form of late and scored his first goal for Jose Mourinho’s men during the 2-0 Europa League win over Zorya on Thursday night.

And Keown feels that Mkhitaryan is now on course to hit top gear for Manchester United as the hectic festive period in the Premier League looms large.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Keown said: “There is an argument that Jose Mourinho needed to play Henrikh Mkhitaryan sooner but maybe this was how the Armenian needed to be managed.

“Being kept waiting is perfect for some players as it means they work harder to prove their point. When they do get into the side, all that work counts.

“I don’t understand why it has taken so long for Mkhitaryan to get going — he was named players’ player of the season after making 15 assists in the Bundesliga for Dortmund last season — but now it looks like he is really in the mood.”
