Martin Keown delivers verdict on Virgil van Dijk amid Liverpool, Man City link
The Arsenal legend is an admirer of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk
Martin Keown believes Virgil van Dijk would be a success if the Southampton defender moves to a big Premier League club in the January transfer window.
The Netherlands international has enjoyed a promising start to the Premier League campaign after continuing to excel alongside Southampton captain Jose Fonte.
Van Dijk has started all 17 of the Saints’ Premier League games in the 2016-17 season to help the south coast club remain in the top half of the table.
Liverpool were linked with a move for the Dutch centre-half earlier this season amid criticism of Jurgen Klopp’s defence in recent weeks.
However, Manchester City have emerged as the favourites to sign the Southampton defender ahead of the January transfer window.
Speaking to The Daily Mail about the Netherlands defender, Keown delivered a glowing verdict on the Southampton man.
“He would be a good acquisition. Some players thrive when they go to a big club while others find it more difficult but Van Dijk has that package of height, pace and power. He looks hungry and is quick enough to play in a back three,” Keown said.
“He was a snip at £13million when Southampton signed him from Celtic and has certainly proved how good he is. I don’t think £50m is fantastic value for City but you have to pay a premium now for centre backs.”
Manchester City are in third place in the Premier League table and seven points behind leaders Chelsea after 17 games.
Liverpool are six points adrift of Antonio Conte’s side.
