Martin Keown: Why Chelsea have an advantage in title race

The Arsenal legend admits that Chelsea do have a slight advantage over the festive period

Martin Keown believes Chelsea do have a slight advantage over the festive period with their Premier League fixtures spread out unlike their title rivals.

Chelsea will play three times in 10 days as the west London side take on Bournemouth, Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur over the Christmas spell.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have an intense run of fixtures as Jurgen Klopp’s side play three times in seven days, including two games in 72 hours.

The Blues are already six points ahead of the Merseyside outfit in the title race after their 1-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park at the weekend.

Chelsea have won their last 11 Premier League games to hoist Antonio Conte’s side clear of their title rivals since a 3-0 loss at Arsenal at The Emirates in September.

Quizzed about Chelsea’s Christmas schedule ahead of the visit of Bournemouth on Boxing Day, former Arsenal defender Keown explained why he believes the west London side do have an advantage.

“It does make it easier for Chelsea. Each team should have the same number of days’ rest between their fixtures and it should not be so comfortable for one team,” Keown told The Daily Mail.

“As a player, you have to pace yourself over the Christmas period. If you are away too much it becomes a bit of an ordeal. I remember playing for Aston Villa one Boxing Day then travelling straight to a hotel for the next game.”
