Martin Keown: Zlatan Ibrahimovic is ruthless, he can emulate Man United legend
The former Arsenal defender says Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been impressive at Manchester United
Martin Keown believes Zlatan Ibrahimovic is capable of emulating Manchester United legend Eric Cantona at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils signed the 35-year-old centre-forward in a free transfer from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Ibrahimovic has scored nine times in 15 Premier League appearances this season following his switch to the 20-time English champions.
The former AC Milan and Barcelona forward netted a late winner in Manchester United’s 2-1 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.
Ex Arsenal defender Keown admits that he has been very impressed with Ibrahimovic’s impact at Old Trafford despite being in the twilight of his career.
“I think Ibrahimovic is used to doing this. He is one of the most decorated players in Europe and is here to win. He has a real ruthlessness in his game. He is phenomenal playing every match at his age and it is testament to his strength and fitness,” Keown told The Daily Mail.
“He wants to stay with this young group having signed a new contract. They will eventually have to find a replacement – does it come from within or do they buy again? Eric Cantona’s name was being sung at Selhurst Park — he carried United to their first title in 26 years and took the pressure off everyone.
“Is Ibrahimovic as big a personality to do the same this time around? Right now he is a really important player for United, both with his personality and performances.”
Ibrahimovic has netted 14 times in all competitions under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The Red Devils are in sixth place in the table and six points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City.
The 20-time English champions will host West Bromwich Albion in their next Premier League game at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
