Michael Owen reacts to Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Everton

Michael Owen says Arsenal could not cope with Everton's aggression after the Toffees' 2-1 win over the Gunners

Michael Owen says Arsenal were unable to deal with Everton’s aggressive play as the Gunners were pegged back and beaten 2-1 at Goodison Park on Tuesday night.

The Gunners headed into the game knowing that a win would move them to the top of the Premier League table and the visitors took the lead in the 20th minute when Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick deflected in off Ashley Williams.

However, Everton drew level on the stroke of half time when Seamus Coleman headed home an equaliser.

Arsenal pressed for a second goal after the break but it was Everton who managed to conjure a winner thanks to Williams’s goal late on.

The defeat was Arsenal’s first in the Premier League since the opening weekend of the season and former Liverpool striker Owen delivered his verdict on the result after the final whistle.

Speaking on BT Sport, Owen said: “It was the right way to play from Everton, with more aggression.

“I think if you’re going to label anything against Arsenal, it’s that they’re going to struggle against aggressive teams.

“When you need a result under the lights in front of your home fans, there’s something that gives you that bit extra – I can’t explain what it is as a football player.”
