Paul Merson states prediction for Middlesbrough v Liverpool
The Arsenal legend is backing Liverpool to beat Middlesbrough despite their suspect defence
Paul Merson is backing Liverpool to beat Middlesbrough despite admitting his concerns about Jurgen Klopp’s defence.
The Merseyside outfit have conceded a staggering 20 goals in their opening 15 Premier League games, which is a worse defensive record than their title rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, Liverpool are the Premier League’s leading goal-scorers after finding the net 37 times so far this season thanks to the prolific form of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
Liverpool have only managed to collect a point from their last two Premier League games after a 4-3 loss to Bournemouth was followed by a 2-2 draw with struggling West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is backing Liverpool to ease to victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night despite admitting his concerns about the Reds’ defence.
“Defensively Liverpool are not good enough; can they keep a clean sheet? I will go Liverpool to win just because they are good going forward, but their Achilles’ heel is at the back,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Other teams will always be in the game against them because they will always have belief that Liverpool will give you a chance.”
Liverpool finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season after Klopp was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’ successor back in October 2015.
