Olivier Giroud ‘saddened’ for Arsenal defender after injury setback
The Arsenal striker sends a heartfelt message to Mathieu Debuchy after the right-back's hamstring injury
Olivier Giroud has admitted that he was bitterly disappointed for Mathieu Debuchy after the Arsenal defender suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth.
The France right-back was making his first Arsenal appearance since November 2015 after Spain international Hector Bellerin made the full-back spot his own over the past 18 months.
However, Debuchy was presented with a chance to impress Arsene Wenger after Bellerin suffered ankle ligament damage during the north London side’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur last month.
But Debuchy lasted 16 minutes before the former Newcastle United man was brought off and Brazilian centre-half Gabriel Paulista slotted in at right-back.
Arsenal striker Giroud has sent a heartfelt message to Debuchy following his compatriot’s injury nightmare ahead of the Gunners’ Premier League trip to West Ham United.
“I’m sad for him,” Giroud told SFR Sport – as quoted by Metro.
“On top of him player that I like a lot, he’s also a great guy.
“I hope he comes back quickly and stronger than before, but it’s true it’s starting to become a lot for him.”
Arsenal are unbeaten in the Premier League since a 4-3 loss to title rivals Liverpool in their opening Premier League game of the 2016-17 season.
The Gunners are in fourth place in the Premier League table and three points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
