Pat Nevin: This change Antonio Conte has made at Chelsea will worry opponents
Pat Nevin comments on Chelsea's new-found defensive stability under Antonio Conte
Pat Nevin believes that the Chelsea defence under Antonio Conte will be a “chilling” sight for most opposition forwards.
The Blues continued their fine form in the Premier League on Saturday night when they came from a goal down to beat bitter local rivals Tottenham Hotspur and keep their place at the top of the table.
Chelsea were outplayed for long spells in the clash in the first half as Christian Eriksen gave the visitors the lead at Stamford Bridge.
But Pedro hauled Chelsea back into contention when he curled home an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, before Victor Moses made it 2-1 after the break.
Chelsea have earned plenty of praise for their solid defensive form since a switch to a 3-4-3 formation under Conte.
And Chelsea legend Nevin believes that the defence at Stamford Bridge is one of the pillars of the Blues’ success so far this season.
Writing in his column for Chelsea’s website, Nevin said: “The introduction of Branislav Ivanovic near the end while dropping Alonso deeper to make it a monumental-looking back five, is a pretty chilling sight for any forward.
“Not many goals will be scored against those personnel and that formation, with two sitting midfielders in front of it and Thibaut Courtois behind!
“It looked like an almighty door being slammed shut on Tottenham’s ambitions when the boss made that move, and very Italian.”
