Paul Merson: Antonio Conte needs to make these Chelsea signings in January
The former Arsenal midfielder says Chelsea need to add depth to their squad
Paul Merson believes Chelsea manager Antonio Conte should sign a couple of big players in the January transfer window.
The Blues have been in superb form in the Premier League in recent months after a run of 11 consecutive victories to leave Chelsea an impressive six points clear of their closest rivals Liverpool.
Chelsea appointed Conte as their manager ahead of the 2016-17 season and the former Juventus boss signed five players in the summer transfer window as he looked to stamp his authority on the west London club.
David Luiz sealed a return to Chelsea in a £32m deal from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and N’Golo Kante swapped Leicester City for Chelsea in a £34m transfer.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Chelsea will need greater depth in their squad if the Blues do return to the Champions League next season.
And the retired England international believes Conte needs to sign cover at wing-back as well as add a couple of top players to his Chelsea squad.
“I think that they should go out and buy in January, if only because they need to plan ahead for next season,” Merson told The Daily Star.
“Whether they win the league or not they will find it much tougher because they will almost certainly be in Europe.
“Conte will need players who can come in and deputise for his wing-backs because he won’t be able to play Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso every week – and he should bring those players in now.
“Chelsea are in a great position to go out and buy a couple of big players to freshen it up and keep everyone on their toes.
“It could be the difference between success or failure, whether they break the record or not.”
