Paul Merson delivers blunt Arsenal verdict on Mesut Ozil
The Arsenal legend wasn't impressed with Mesut Ozil's performance at Everton
Paul Merson has criticised Mesut Ozil’s performance in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Everton ahead of their clash against Manchester City at The Etihad on Sunday afternoon.
The Germany international struggled to make an impression on the blue half of Merseyside despite the Arsenal midfielder’s impressive start to the 2016-17 season.
Ozil was unable to stop Ashley Williams scoring an added-time winner at Goodison Park after the Wales international managed to shrug off the attentions of the Arsenal defence.
Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Everton was their first Premier League loss since Liverpool were 4-3 winners at The Emirates in the north London club’s opening fixture of the 2016-17 season.
Writing in his Daily Star column, former Arsenal midfielder Merson explained why he was disappointing with Ozil’s performance against the Toffees.
“I watched them lose at Everton and I know Mesut Ozil isn’t there to defend his own box but he was so poor for the winning goal.
“He was cowering as the ball came in and he literally ran away from it.
“That’s not good enough. That doesn’t win you league titles. He doesn’t even need to win it.
“Just a little nudge could have been enough to put Ashley Williams off but he gave up.
“Arsenal can’t afford to do that.”
Arsenal have the chance to move to four points clear of fourth-placed Manchester City on Sunday afternoon if the Gunners manage to beat Pep Guardiola’s men at The Etihad.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
