Paul Merson delivers his verdict on Danny Welbeck’s Arsenal return

Paul Merson says that Danny Welbeck's return to action will be like a new signing for Arsenal

Paul Merson has talked up the importance of Danny Welbeck making a return to action for Arsenal in the coming weeks.

The Arsenal striker has not yet made an appearance for the Gunners this season due to a serious knee injury suffered towards the end of the last campaign.

However, Arsene Wenger confirmed before Sunday’s clash with Manchester City that Welbeck is due to resume first-team training in the coming days as he bids to build his fitness levels back up again.

It has been a frustrating start to life for Welbeck at Arsenal since his arrival at the club from Manchester United, with the forward struggling with a number of serious injuries.

However, Arsenal legend Merson believes that Welbeck’s return will provide the north London side with a welcome boost in the Premier League title race.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday morning, Merson said: “That’s what they need, a player who has got pace and can come off the bench. They needed him back now, as they’re in plenty of competitions.

“He’s like a new signing. I’m not saying he will go straight into the starting line-up, but he gives them many more options with lots of games coming up over Christmas.”
