Paul Merson issues warning to Arsenal, Liverpool in title race
The former Arsenal midfielder say Chelsea are close to building a commanding advantage in title race
Paul Merson has warned Arsenal and Liverpool that they can ill-afford to allow Chelsea to move further clear in the Premier League title race.
The west London side have been in imperious form in the English top flight in recent months after Chelsea recorded their tenth successive Premier League victory at Stadium of Light on Wednesday night.
Spain international Cesc Fabregas scored a first-half winner to seal a close-fought victory over David Moyes’ struggling Sunderland side in the mid-week clash in the Premier League.
Chelsea ended the weekend seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City as Antonio Conte looks to win the Premier League title in his first season at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool will look to close the gap back down to six points when they play Everton on Monday night.
“People say there’s still a long way to go in the title race but every game counts, and these are big games [for Arsenal and Liverpool],” Merson told The Daily Star.
“You can’t let anyone get too big a lead at this stage of the season and that is what Chelsea are threatening to do.”
Conte was appointed as the Chelsea manager in the summer after the Blues finished in tenth place in the Premier League table in the 2015-16 season.
The Blues signed five players in the summer transfer window as Conte looked to stamp his authority on the Chelsea squad.
