Paul Merson makes bold claim about Chelsea in title race
The former Arsenal midfielder warns that Chelsea could hit a brick wall in the title race
Paul Merson believes there is a chance that Chelsea could hit a brick wall in the final months of the Premier League season.
The west London side have been in superb form in the Premier League in recent months after an incredible run of 11 consecutive victories.
Chelsea were 1-0 winners against Crystal Palace last time out thanks to Diego Costa’s first-half winner at Selhurst Park.
However, the Spain international will be suspended for their home clash against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.
Chelsea haven’t lost a Premier League fixture since a 3-0 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in September.
Writing in his Daily Star column, Merson expressed his concern that Chelsea could struggle in the final months of the campaign.
“If Chelsea want to be remembered as a great team they will have to win the league. And I think there’s a danger they could hit a brick wall before the end of the season,” Merson said.
“Conte’s system only works because Chelsea are only playing once a week.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season as Antonio Conte was appointed as their manager.
The Blues signed five players in the summer transfer window, including Brazil defender David Luiz and Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante.
