Paul Merson: These two problems suggest Liverpool won’t win the title
The former Arsenal defender questions Liverpool's goalkeeper and defence in the Premier League title race
Paul Merson believes Jurgen Klopp’s goalkeeper and defence could prevent Liverpool from winning the Premier League title.
The Merseyside outfit have been in impressive form in the 2016-17 season after Klopp signed seven players in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool were 1-0 winners against Everton at Goodison Park on Monday night after Sadio Mane scored in the fourth minute of added time in the Merseyside derby.
The 18-time English champions are in second place in the Premier League table and six point adrift of leaders Chelsea in the title race.
Liverpool have conceded 20 times in 17 games in the 2016-17 Premier League season after their much-documented struggles at the back.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson explained why he has his doubts about Liverpool’s ability to win the Premier League this season.
“Liverpool proved they are in the title race by scraping a late winner at Everton on Monday,” Merson told The Daily Star.
“But it’s very rare for a team to win the Premier League without a top class goalkeeper and a decent back four.
“Liverpool don’t have either of those things. Both their keepers have a mistake in them and their back four just don’t defend very well.
“When things get tighter towards the end of the season and the pressure is really on, they might start to struggle.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season.
Klopp signed seven players in the summer transfer as he looked to put his stamp on the Merseyside outfit following his appointment back in October 2015.
