Paul Merson: This is what Arsenal do really well
The former Arsenal midfielder says Arsene Wenger's side are experts at beating the Premier League's weaker sides
Paul Merson believes Arsenal are experts at beating the Premier League’s lesser sides.
The Gunners lost 4-3 to title rivals Liverpool in their opening game of the 2016-17 campaign before going on a 14-game unbeaten run in the Premier League to bolster their bid to win the top-flight crown for the first time since 2004.
However, Arsene Wenger’s side suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats in their final two games before Christmas Day to raise questions about whether the Gunners are the real deal this season.
Arsenal squandered a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Everton at Goodison Park after Seamus Coleman and Ashley Williams cancelled out Alexis Sanchez’s opener.
The Gunners relinquished another lead at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ ahead of Arsenal’s 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at The Emirates on Boxing Day, Merson admitted that the Gunners struggle against the so-called ‘big’ clubs.
“Arsenal beat the lesser teams. It’s when they come up against the big teams recently [they’ve struggled],” Merson said.
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season.
