Paul Merson: What I find strange about the Liverpool team under Jurgen Klopp

The former Arsenal midfielder is surprised that James Milner is still playing at left-back in the Liverpool side

Paul Merson has admitted he is bemused that Jurgen Klopp is still playing James Milner as left-back in the Liverpool side.

The former England international replaced Alberto Moreno at full-back after the Spain international struggled during Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over Arsenal in their opening Premier League of the 2016-17 season.

Milner has been utilised at left-back in 15 of Liverpool’s subsequent 16 games, even managing to score five goals in the Premier Legue campaign – all from the penalty spot.

Liverpool have conceded 20 times in 17 games in the Premier League season, although Loris Karius and his centre-halves have attracted criticism for their defensive record.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson questioned Klopp’s decision to stick with Milner at left-back.

“I find it strange that James Milner is playing at left-back as well. He’s a seven or eight out of 10 player every week but he’s being shoehorned in at left-back,” Merson told The Daily Star.

Liverpool signed Milner in a free transfer from Manchester City in the 2015 summer transfer window during Brendan Rodgers’ spell in charge of the Anfield outfit.
