Paul Merson: Why I’m convinced Chelsea will make signings in January transfer window
The former Arsenal midfielder believes Antonio Conte will bolster his Chelsea squad in the January transfer window
Paul Merson believes Chelsea will look to make some additions to their squad in the January transfer window.
The Blues have made an impressive start to life under new manager Antonio Conte after the ex Juventus boss replaced Guus Hiddink at Stamford Bridge earlier this year.
The west London outfit signed five players in the summer transfer window as the new Chelsea boss looked to overhaul the squad that he inherited after last season’s tenth-place finish.
N’Golo Kante moved to Chelsea in a £32m deal from Leicester City and Michy Batshuayi sealed a £34m switch from Marseille. David Luiz sealed a return to the Blues from Paris Saint-Germain in a £32m deal on the final day of the summer transfer window.
However, Merson believes Chelsea will look to strengthen further before suggesting that Conte’s ability to secure quality signings could determine whether the Blues or Manchester City win the title this season.
“Chelsea are two big injuries away from being really weakened. How would they cope with losing Eden Hazard or Diego Costa?” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.
“I think they will buy in the window – and so will City. Who comes out of it having done the best business will have a big impact on the title race. City’s full backs aren’t good enough.
“I think they need to strengthen there as they are always vulnerable – they always look capable of conceding a goal.”
Chelsea are joint-favourites with Manchester City to win the Premier League title this season.
