Schmeichel: Mourinho wouldn’t have made this Man United signing at Chelsea
The Manchester United legend questions whether Jose Mourinho would have signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Chelsea manager
Peter Schmeichel has suggested that Jose Mourinho wouldn’t have signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic if the manager was still in charge at Chelsea.
The Manchester United boss made the former Sweden international his second signing of the summer after the 35-year-old centre-forward completed a free transfer to Old Trafford in July.
Ibrahimovic has made an impressive start to life at Old Trafford after having made the seamless transition to the Premier League from Ligue 1 despite being in the twilight of his career.
The former AC Milan and Barcelona striker has scored eight times in 14 Premier League games ahead of their home clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
Ibrahimovic netted three times in five Europa League appearances to help the Red Devils book their place in Monday’s last-32 draw.
Former Manchester United legend Schmeichel believes the signing of Ibrahimovic highlights that Mourinho has changed his ways at Old Trafford.
“I think Mourinho has to change his way a little bit to please the fans, the club and the traditions of the club,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports’ Soccer AM show.
“I think he’s showing signs of that, the players that he is signing, they are of a different calibre.
“Zlatan Ibrahimovic is someone he probably wouldn’t have signed had he been at Chelsea, but he’s United’s kind of player, the kind the supporters like to see.
“He’s rewarding us with great skills and great goals – I think he has scored seven so far.”
The Red Devils finished in fifth place last season under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal.
