Phil Thompson makes prediction about Liverpool and Man United in top-four race
Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson doesn't expect the top-four race to change
Phil Thompson is backing Liverpool to finish in the top four but doesn’t expect Manchester United to squeeze into the Champions League places.
The Reds are in second place in the table and six points behind leaders Chelsea after Liverpool were 1-0 winners against Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday night.
Manchester City were 2-1 winners against title rivals Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon to hoist the Citizens above Arsene Wenger’s side and leave them seven points adrift of Chelsea.
Arsenal are coming under pressure from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United as the chasing pack managed to close the gap on Arsene Wenger’s side following back-to-back defeats for the Gunners.
Speaking to Sky Sports about the top-four race, former Liverpool captain Thompson claimed that Jose Mourinho would be unable to guide the Red Devils to a Champions League spot despite their recent upturn in form.
“Can I see anyone other than Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal making the top four? There are teams like Manchester United and Tottenham who have got to start moving,” Thompson said.
“Everton had ideas of finishing up there and so did Southampton, who have been playing well. There’s big pressure for that top four but it looks at this moment that those four are the strongest.”
Manchester United have won their last three Premier League games thanks to victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and West Brom.
