Phil Thompson: This is what Chelsea must prove against Man City
Phil Thompson looks ahead to Chelsea's trip to Manchester City this weekend
Phil Thompson believes that there are still question marks about Chelsea’s ability to beat the top teams ahead of their trip to Manchester City this weekend.
The Blues head to The Etihad on Saturday lunchtime looking to maintain their impressive winning run in the Premier League.
Chelsea have won their last seven games in the top flight, including a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
The west London side were beaten by both Liverpool and Arsenal earlier in the season, and former Liverpool star Thompson feels that Saturday’s game against City could end up being a litmus test of their title credentials.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson said: “It’s very difficult to pin a weakness on this side given the form they are in but the one thing they’ve got to prove here is that they can beat the top sides.
“I know they won against Tottenham but they were outplayed in the first half until Spurs tired, and before their run we were asking a lot of questions about them as they lost to Arsenal and Liverpool. This is the big test for them, especially away from home.”
