The Manchester United midfielder is grateful for support of the club's fans

Bastian Schweinsteiger has sent a heartfelt message of thanks to the Manchester United supporters ahead of New Year’s Day.

The Germany international has endured an interesting 12 months at Old Trafford which has seen Jose Mourinho replace Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager.

The 31-year-old was a first-team regular under the Dutchman but has fallen out-of-favour under the new manager following Mourinho’s appointment in May.

The Portuguese coach banished the German legend to the club’s Under-21 side after declaring that Schweinsteiger was surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

The former Bayern Munich skipper has since been recalled from his Manchester United exile and was a late substitute in a 4-1 win against West Ham United in the League Cup in early December.

And Schweinsteiger posted the above collage of photos with Manchester United supporters on his Instagram page and wrote the following caption:

“Thank you for your outstanding support this year!”
