Sir Alex Ferguson cut a relieved figure in the stands at Old Trafford after Manchester United came from behind to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 on New Year’s Eve.

The Red Devils had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half before Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s close-range strike was disallowed for a high foot much to the obvious frustration of manager Jose Mourinho.

Sunderland broke the deadlock against the run of play in the 67th minute after Grant Leadbitter completed an impressive move.

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes produced a number of saves to keep Manchester United out as Middlesbrough eyed a famous win.

However, Anthony Martial levelled the clash with a clinical finish after Ibrahimovic’s header after the France international was introduced from the bench.

Less than 80 seconds later, world-record signing Paul Pogba secured three points with a header thanks to his third Premier League goal of the 2016-17 campaign.

And Ferguson looked relieved to leave Old Trafford with three points on his 75th birthday in the above photo as the ex-Manchester United manager watched the Red Devils record a fifth successive Premier League.
