Pundit issues Man United transfer warning over Virgil van Dijk

Kevin Kilbane hails Manchester United target Virgil van Dijk as the Premier League's best defender

Kevin Kilbane believes Virgil van Dijk will be on the move in the January transfer window even if Manchester United don’t complete a deal for the Southampton defender.

The Netherlands international produced another impressive performance alongside Jose Fonte as the Saints eased to 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.

The former Celtic defender has started all 15 of the south coast club’s 15 Premier League games this season and has barely put a foot wrong to establish himself as one of the top flight’s best defenders.

Van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks, while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also thought to be keen on the Dutch centre-half.

Ex Everton and Wigan Athletic defender Kilbane warned Red Devils boss Mourinho that it won’t be long before Van Dijk is on the move if Manchester United don’t sign the defender.

“Virgil van Dijk is on his way, it’s as simple as that. He is the best defender in the Premier League and whether he goes to Manchester United or not, he will leave Southampton,” Kilbane told BBC Sport.

Mourinho signed Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly in a £30m deal from Villarreal in the summer.
