Pundit: Liverpool need to make this signing or miss out on the title
Kevin Kilbane urges Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a goalkeeper in the January transfer window
Kevin Kilbane believes Liverpool need to sign a goalkeeper in the January transfer window if Jurgen Klopp is going to steer the Reds to the Premier League title.
The German’s shot stoppers have provided the Liverpool boss with a headache this season, with both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet having made high-profile mistakes.
Klopp signed Karius in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga outfit Mainz in the summer transfer window as he looked to improve his options in the goalkeeping department.
However, the 23-year-old was heavily criticised for his erratic performances against Bournemouth and West Ham United in early December which prompted Klopp to restore Mignolet to his starting line-up.
Liverpool were 4-1 winners against Stoke City on Tuesday evening thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana, Daniel Sturridge and own goal after Mignolet made a mistake for Jonathan Walters’ opener.
Speaking to BBC Sport after Liverpool’s 4-1 win against Stoke City on Tuesday evening, former Everton defender Kilbane explained why Liverpool must sign a goalkeeper in the January transfer window.
“There will be question marks over Liverpool’s goalkeeping again unless they sign a goalkeeper in the next transfer window,” Kilbane said.
Kilbane added: “They are serious contenders for the title. I do feel they’re serious contenders. Apart from the goalkeeper errors we’ve seen this season, they’d have been a lot closer to Chelsea any way.”
Mignolet moved to Liverpool in a £9m deal from Sunderland in 2013.
The Reds are in second place in the Premier League table and six points adrift of leaders Chelsea after 18 games.
