Ray Parlour says Mesut Ozil has been missing this Arsenal star
Ray Parlour discusses Mesut Ozil's form and points to Santi Cazorla's as having an effect on the German
Ray Parlour believes that Mesut Ozil has been missing Santi Cazorla’s input in the Arsenal midfield in recent games.
Cazorla has been out of action since October and recently underwent ankle surgery, ruling him out until the new year.
The Spaniard is usually one of the first names on the Arsenal team sheet and has been one of the north London club’s most consistent performers in recent seasons.
Arsenal are currently looking to bounce back from their disappointing back to back defeats at the hands of Everton and Manchester City in the Premier League.
Ozil and his Arsenal team-mates were criticised for their lacklustre performance in the second half at The Etihad on Sunday as City scored two goals to beat Arsene Wenger’s men.
And former Arsenal midfielder Parlour feels that Ozil is suffering in the absence of Cazorla from the Arsenal team.
Speaking to The Daily Express, Parlour said: “Sometimes when Arsenal aren’t playing well, they aren’t getting as much possession as they would like.
“He thrives on possession and passing the ball on a regular basis.
“When he went missing in the second-half, City had most of the possession and were dictating the game.
“Ozil is not a player who will run back into midfield and make a tackle or try and get back on the ball.
“He relies on people controlling midfield – Cazorla is very good – he dictates possession and he can link up a bit better with Ozil.”
Arsenal are currently gearing up for their Boxing Day clash against West Brom at The Emirates on Monday.
