Ray Parlour: This is why Man United appointed Jose Mourinho
The Arsenal legend warns Jose Mourinho that he was brought in to secure a top-four finish for Manchester United
Ray Parlour has warned Jose Mourinho that he was appointed as Manchester United manager under the assumption that he’d secure a top-four finish this season.
The Red Devils have work to do to qualify for next season’s Champions League competition after a run of two victories in 10 Premier League games.
The 20-time English champions are 11 points behind Mourinho’s former club Chelsea in the Premier League title race after one win in seven top-flight fixtures.
Of more concern will be the eight-point deficit between fourth-placed Arsenal and Manchester United ahead of their trip to Everton in their next Premier League game at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils secured a morale-boosting 4-1 win against West Ham United in their EFL Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday night after Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial both scored twice.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Parlour warned Mourinho that nothing less than a top-four finish will do for Manchester United this season after a 18-month absence from the Champions League.
“Manchester United need to keep the pressure on [in the top-four race],” Parlour told the Alan Brazil Up Front podcast.
“They’re eight points behind the top four now.
“Jose was brought in to get a Champions League place. They might have to rely on the Europa League to get in the competition again.”
