Ray Parlour: Why Old Trafford holds the key to Man United’s top-four hopes

The Arsenal legend says Manchester United need to continue to improve their results at Old Trafford

Ray Parlour believes Manchester United need to turn Old Trafford into a fortress if the Red Devils are going to finish in top-four race.

The 20-time English champions have started to piece together some impressive form after a run of four successive victories in the English top flight.

Jose Mourinho’s side began their winning run with a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur before victories over Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion on the road.

Manchester United were 3-1 winners against David Moyes’ struggling Sunderland side on Boxing Day thanks to goals from Daley Blind, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Old Trafford.

Mourinho’s side have only lost once at their home stadium this term after a 2-1 loss against derby rivals Manchester City in September. The Red Devils have won four and drawn four times in nine home games.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Tuesday morning after the Boxing Day results, former Arsenal midfielder Parlour explained what Manchester United must do to challenge the top four.

“Old Trafford has to become more of a fortress. Do you remember a time when teams enjoyed going to Old Trafford?” Parlour said.

“Now suddenly, it’s turning a little bit towards going back to the way it was when they had a top quality sides with the likes of Scholes and Keane. It is a lot harder now to go to Old Trafford to get a result.”

Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May after a disappointing fifth-place finish last term.
