Rio Ferdinand: How Alexis Sanchez has become Arsenal’s talisman
The Manchester United legend examines the attributes that Alexis Sanchez brings to the Arsenal team
Rio Ferdinand has hailed Alexis Sanchez’s as the talisman of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal team.
The Gunners have been in superb form over the past week in the Premier League and the Champions League.
Arsenal smashed five past West Ham United on Saturday evening as Sanchez scored a second-half hat-trick in a 5-1 victory at the London Stadium.
The north London outfit’s landslide win hoisted Wenger’s men above Liverpool and into second place but three points behind leaders Chelsea.
Arsenal secured top spot in Champions League Group A on Tuesday night thanks to a 4-1 win against Basel in freezing temperatures in Switzerland.
Sanchez teed up Lucas Perez for the Arsenal striker’s third goal in their final group-stage clash.
Speaking to BT Sport ahead of Arsenal’s 4-1 win against Basel, Ferdinand explained how Sanchez has become Arsenal’s main man.
“He is the talisman, he is the inspiration for this football club at the moment,” Ferdinand said.
“He’s scoring goals, harrying defenders. You need him in your team. Assists, setting up chances for others… he can play that deeper role. But the centre-forward play [has been impressive].”
Sanchez moved to Arsenal in a £35m deal from Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The Gunners will host Stoke City in their next Premier League fixture at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
