Rio Ferdinand: This is why people doubt Arsenal

Rio Ferdinand discusses the lingering doubts surrounding Arsenal this season

Rio Ferdinand says that it is up to Arsenal’s current crop of players to prove their doubters wrong this season.

The north London side made it back to back wins in the Premier League on Saturday night when they secured a thumping 5-1 win over West Ham United to keep pace with Chelsea at the top of the table.

Alexis Sanchez scored a sublime hat-trick to add to goals from Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the Gunners kept to within three points of the Premier League leaders.

Much has been made of Arsenal’s failure to win the Premier League since their famous unbeaten triumph last season.

The Gunners ended up second in the table and 10 points behind surprise champions Leicester City last term.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand feels that now is the time for Arsenal’s players to step up and prove they can win major honours.

Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Ferdinand said: “The reason people doubt this Arsenal team is because over the years they have flattered to deceive. When it’s got tough and they’ve needed to produce the results, they haven’t produced them.

“This team now have to change that perception with results and performances at the critical times of the year.

“In this Christmas period coming up, they’ve got to come out of the blocks flying and at the turn of the year, be in a position to strike.”
