Robbie Savage delivers verdict on Liverpool’s title chances after Philippe Coutinho blow
The former Leicester City midfielder believes Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side are still Premier League title contenders
Robbie Savage is adamant that Liverpool are still Premier League title contenders despite Philippe Coutinho’s injury blow.
The Brazil international has been a key player in their brilliant start to the 2016-17 season after a return of five goals and five assists in 13 Premier League appearances.
However, Coutinho was forced off in the first half of Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday afternoon after picking up an ankle injury.
Subsequent scans have highlighted that the Brazil international has suffered ankle ligament damage and is set for a spell on the sidelines ahead of the festive period.
Adam Lallana missed Liverpool’s 2-0 win against the Black Cats due to a fitness problem, while Roberto Firmino picked up a knock in the closing stages of the Premier League clash.
However, former Leicester City midfielder Savage is refusing to rule Liverpool out of the title race despite their massive injury blow.
“Liverpool have gone 11 league matches without defeat. They have won eight and drawn three. They’re one point off Chelsea. I think they’ve got a fantastic opportunity to win the league,” Savage told BBC Radio Five Live’s 606 show.
Savage added: “Coutinho and Lallana being out together is a huge blow. Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana – that link of play has been scintillating at times this season. However, players have got to step in.”
Liverpool are in second place and a point behind leaders Chelsea after 13 games.
